Field (Datatype: Checkbox) and want to make it required. Greyed out in layout

I created a field (Data Type : Checkbox).  When I go to page layout..........the property option for required is greyed out.  But is appears all other fields allow me to opt for required.   What is the best way to make it required and did I make a mistake when creating this field that might have not given me the required option?

    I need to make certain fields not required anymore for certain acount fields.

     

     I have the same problem with the required box being greyed out when I look at it coming from the page layout. I should be able to just uncheck the required box, right?

    Also, when I go on the fields list and start editing the fields, the fields that are required when you are actively editing an account, do not have the required checkbox checked. It's very weird. see two images below

    Please advise on how I can make fields not required anymore without doing a validation rule or some other workaround. Thx
