How do I get a count of number of times a custom link is selected?

I have created several custom links and wondering if I can create a report that will give a count of number of times each is selected.

So the idea will be to create fields[Number fields] on the Custom Object itself and then make use of the Force.com AJAX Toolkit to update( increment ) the Number field by one each time thay are clicked. Will that help ?

How many buttons ? And what does they do ?
