Set Up SMS Channels for the US and Canada

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:

  • Explain the regulatory requirements for requesting an SMS code for the US or Canada.
  • List the steps to register a brand and campaign for SMS messaging.
  • Request a 10-digit long code (10DLC) for SMS messaging.

Gather All of Your Information

Ready to set up your SMS channel? To make the process smoother, gather all required information before you start. Think of it as a detailed grocery list, but with legal requirements.

  • Company name
  • Company’s legal address, which must match your tax records
  • SMS brand name you’re registering
  • Country of registration (for the primary company)
  • Company type, such as public, private, government, or NGO
  • Company website URL in the format https://www.example.com
  • EIN (for US brands) or tax ID (for Canadian brands, issued by the Canada Revenue Agency), entered as a nine-digit number in XXXXXXXXX or XX-XXXXXXX format
  • Industry
  • Stock-related details (if your company is publicly traded), including stock symbol, business contact email address, and Stock Exchange name
  • Contact information for a support person, including first name, last name, email address, and phone number
  • How your brand uses Salesforce for SMS messaging
Note

To prevent session expiration, submit your brand, campaign, and code request within 30 minutes of initiating the request.

Request Your Brand

Now follow these steps to submit your request.

  1. In Setup, in the Quick Find box, search for and select Regulatory Compliance.
  2. On the 10DLC Brands tab, click Register Brand.
  3. Enter the details, and then click Next. Note: The contact information must include a brand website, an email address and phone number for support, and how the brand relates to Salesforce.
  4. Enter the company information for the brand, and click Submit.

Review the status of your request on the Regulatory Compliance page. You’ll either get a message saying it went through, or you’ll get an error message with instructions on what to do next. Usually, brands get approved quickly (like 5 minutes), or it can take a few days. As long as your company name, tax ID, and address match the official records, you'll be good to go in just a few minutes. Delays often happen when the brand is from outside the US or when there are mix-ups or missing information that needs to be checked manually.

Request Your Campaign

You can run several different campaigns from your SMS code, so this phase of your code request requires a great deal of sample information. Generally, you’re providing all legal and sample messages you plan on using, along with how you plan to send those messages to your recipients. Make sure you have at least one brand request approved before requesting a campaign. After you put this information together, follow these steps.

  1. In Setup, in the Quick Find box, search for and select Regulatory Compliance.
  2. On the 10DLC Campaigns tab, click Register Campaign.
  3. Enter the information for the campaign, and click Next.
  4. Enter the attributes, including keywords and regulatory content, and click Next.
  5. Enter the opt-in information, and click Next. This information defines how subscribers can agree to receive marketing SMS messages.
  6. Enter the opt-out information, and click Submit. This information defines how subscribers can stop receiving marketing SMS messages or get additional assistance.

Just like the brand request, you can check the Regulatory Compliance page to find out when your campaign is verified. You can also see what you might need to do to fix any errors. Usually, campaigns get approved in 5–12 working days.

Get Your SMS Code

After you get your brand and campaign approved, you can finally request your code. Follow these steps to get on your way.

  1. In Setup, in the Quick Find box, search for and select SMS Codes.
  2. Click Request Code.
  3. Select United States or Canada as the country that you want to associate the code with.
  4. For Code Type, select 10-Digit Long Code, and click Next.
  5. Review the regulatory compliance notices, and click Next.
  6. Select the brand and campaign from your registered options.
  7. Enter the number of codes that you want. If you request more than one code, enter the reason for that quantity.
  8. Click Submit.

Wait for approval or (hopefully not) an error message. Code requests are usually approved quickly, from 5 minutes to 48 hours. Once everything is resolved, you’re ready to start sending messages—well, almost! You just need to activate your code and configure its consent settings, which you learn in the next unit.
