Volunteer Your Time

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:

  • Find a volunteer opportunity in Philanthropy Cloud.
  • Sign up for a volunteer opportunity.
  • Log your volunteer time.

Connect to Causes

As an integrated giving and volunteering solution, Philanthropy Cloud empowers employees to:

  • Choose which causes to support.
  • Donate time, money, or both.
  • View their contributions in real time.

Let’s check back in with Lincoln Ulrich, Account Executive at Ursa Major Solar, Inc., and follow along as he uses Philanthropy Cloud to volunteer his time to a cause. Lincoln participated in a new-hire volunteering event at a local food bank when he first started with the company. It was a great way for Lincoln to meet his colleagues, represent Ursa Major Solar’s commitment to their local community, and satisfy his desire to give back to his community.

The event at the food pantry was created and socialized by one of Lincoln’s colleagues who is passionate about food insecurity and grocery store waste. Any employee can be a champion for their cause in Philanthropy Cloud by taking an active role in creating content or organizing an event. In this case, Lincoln’s colleague was able to amplify her personal impact by getting her colleagues engaged with the event.

Find a Volunteer Opportunity

While workplace champions can motivate employees to learn about volunteer opportunities, commit to volunteer time, and develop relationships based on shared interests, sometimes an employee like Lincoln prefers to find activities that meet their own personal passions. Philanthropy Cloud enables employees to easily find and sign up for in-person and virtual volunteer opportunities by cause, type, date, and location.

Lincoln was inspired by his initial volunteer activity at the food bank, and he is motivated to find more volunteer opportunities that align with his interest around homelessness issues. Using advanced search filters, Lincoln can drill down and discover new and relevant opportunities from over 1.5 million causes in the system. Recommended opportunities are based on the skills and causes he selected in his profile.

Note

Note

Using work-related skills in your volunteering is known as skills-based or pro bono volunteering. If you are interested in learning more about using your Salesforce skills to volunteer with a nonprofit, check out the Volunteer Your Salesforce Expertise trail listed in the Resources section of this Unit.

Follow along as Lincoln searches for a way to use his work-related skills to help a nonprofit that serves homeless constituents.

Lincoln enters “homeless” in the search text box and then selects the volunteer opportunities filter type to pare down his search results. In the results, he notices a volunteer opportunity for No More Homelessness, which reminds him about the donation he made to that organization previously. He selects it.

Sign Up for a Volunteer Opportunity

Now that Lincoln has found the right volunteer opportunity, he selects it to view its full details and to sign up. Details include the attendance type, location, dates, and times. Relevant or requested skills are listed, and the skills that match those skills he specified in his profile are highlighted. A link to the organization’s website is also available. Since Ursa Major Solar has enabled social visibility, he can see which of his coworkers have also signed up.

Log Your Volunteer Time

Volunteer time for most pre-scheduled volunteer opportunities is logged automatically at the event's start. However, you must log time manually for your flexible volunteer opportunities, as well as for any other volunteering that you do.

Flexible opportunities enable you to volunteer according to your schedule. You can coordinate with the organizer to arrange your volunteer time. Once you have volunteered, you can log time for your flexible volunteer opportunities in the My Opportunities section of your profile.

You can log time either from your profile or from the Home page for any volunteer opportunities where Philanthropy Cloud did not automatically log the time for you.

As an example, if Lincoln wants to log his volunteer time from his profile, he follows these steps:

  1. Navigate to Profile. Then select Volunteering.

  2. To log time for a flexible volunteer opportunity, navigate to the My Opportunities section. Then locate the appropriate opportunity and select Log Time.

  3. Enter a short description of the activity, as well as the date and duration of your volunteering. Then select Log Time.

  4. To edit the logged time for a volunteer opportunity, navigate to the My Opportunities section. Then locate the appropriate opportunity to view and manage its details. Select Edit to edit a logged time entry. Select Delete to delete a logged time entry.

  5. To log time for a one-time or recurring volunteer opportunity, navigate either to the Volunteering section of your profile or to your Home page and select Log Time. Enter the required information and select Log Time.
