Prepare for Your Mission

Learning Objectives

In this project, you’ll:

  • Install a managed package in your Trailhead Playground.
  • Troubleshoot record access to see who can view which records.
  • Build a security model to control record access.
  • Create a formula to set a field value based on another field.
  • Automate a process that creates a record when conditions are met.

You’re Going to Mars, but First Complete Your Preflight Training

If you’ve done other projects on Trailhead, you know that they guide you step-by-step through building or developing something. This one is a little different. This one sends you to Mars, where you have a series of objectives to achieve. By achieving all the objectives, you complete the Mars mission, get a virtual prize, and earn this Trailhead badge.

As you work, you find clues and hints in your spacecraft and on Mars that point you toward the right solution, but we don’t give you step-by-step instructions that show you what to do. Instead, you draw on your own Salesforce knowledge and experience to achieve each objective.

So before you put on your flight suit for this journey of a lifetime, make sure you have all the training you need to be ready. We don’t want you to venture out into the galaxy unprepared.

To complete this mission, you should know how to:

  • Extend Salesforce with custom objects and apps
  • Determine and implement appropriate data access and visibility settings
  • Automate complex business processes
  • Use Salesforce Help, release notes, and Trailhead to find answers to technical questions

If you’re getting ready to become a Salesforce Certified Advanced Administrator, you’re probably already developing the skills you need for this mission. If not, be sure to review key training materials by completing these Trailhead badges before you attempt this project.

Now everyone knows that even with the best preparation, sometimes things go wrong. If you experience a malfunction, the MarsXP safety plan includes emergency step-by-step instructions you can use to get unjammed. Find the emergency instructions download link in the final step of this project.

Get Ready to Blaze Your Trail to Mars

Here on Trailhead, we love to celebrate Trailblazers who are going places. That’s why we salute you, #AwesomeAdmin, for charting your journey all the way to Mars. One planet just isn’t enough to contain your advanced admin skills, so you’re searching the solar system for new challenges.

If you completed the Build a Mars Communication Uplink project, you used Chatter and Process Builder to exchange messages with the rover on Mars. You also learned how the rover travels around the iron-rich planet, scouting for locations where humans might want to settle.

Well, it turns out that plenty of humans want to settle on Mars. The real estate market there is red-hot, and it’s not just because of the rust-colored dirt everywhere. Just look at one of the listings the rover sent back to Earth.

New! Mars fixer-upper with mountainside views. Bring your hydrospanner and your imagination and make this home your own. What this charmer lacks in curb appeal it more than makes up for in protecting you from the freezing, never-ending dust storms. You'll be happier than a cosmic alien doing the robot (literally) in endless circles. Drinking water DIY. Serious buyers only. Contact Listing Agent Cloudy for details.

Of course, serious buyers won’t purchase a property sight unseen. When a buyer wants to view a listing, an Earth-based agent sets up an appointment to show the property (virtually, of course).

Since demand for property on Mars is so high, agents are busier than ever managing listings and appointments. You would think that with all this interest, agents would have more sales opportunities than they know what to do with.

All Is Not Rosy on the Red Planet

There’s just one problem: The rover has started behaving erratically. Listings and appointments are mysteriously disappearing from Salesforce, buyers are receiving follow-up calls about the wrong listings, and agents aren’t able to close deals as a result.

It’s up to you to travel to Mars, troubleshoot the rover, secure and optimize the real estate app in your Trailhead Playground, and get agents back to doing what they do best: selling the dream of living in space.

Create a Trailhead Playground

If you’re confident you have the advanced admin skills you need to accept this mission, your next step is to create a Trailhead Playground.

Scroll to the bottom of this page, click the down arrow next to Launch, and select Create a Trailhead Playground. It typically takes 3–4 minutes to create a Trailhead Playground.

Note: Yes, we really mean a brand-new Trailhead Playground! This project requires you to install a managed package that contains custom objects and data. If you install the package in an existing playground, the package components can conflict with components that are already there. You can also run into problems when you try to complete the challenges.

Install the Managed Package

After you create your Trailhead Playground, wait a few minutes, then click Launch. Your playground opens in a new window. Keep that window open for the remainder of this project.

If you see a tab in your org labeled Install a Package, great! Follow the numbered steps below.

If not, click App Launcher to launch the App Launcher, then find and click Playground Starter and follow the steps. If you don't see the Playground Starter app, copy this installation link and check out Install a Package or App to Complete a Trailhead Challenge on Trailhead Help.

  1. Click the Install a Package tab.
  2. Paste 04t3h000004m4VN into the field.
  3. Click Install.

Install a Package tab in the Trailhead Playground

  4. Select Install for Admins Only, acknowledge the disclaimer, then click Install.

The package installation page, with the Install button called out

  5. If you see a pop-up asking you to approve third-party access, select Yes, grant access to these third-party websites and click Continue.

When your package is finished installing, you see a confirmation page and get an email to the address associated with your playground. Note that although the Playground Starter app makes installing packages in your playground easy, you should also know how to install them the way you would in production (check out AppExchange Solutions for more information).

In this step, you reviewed the skills you need for Mars, created a playground, and installed a package. Now you’re ready to learn tips for navigating through your mission.
