Make Custom Fields

Track Specific Information with Fields

As you operate your business, there'll be specific information you want to track. These can include your customers' birthdays so you can send them a coupon during their birthday month for a free cup of lemonade. Or perhaps you'll want track their email addresses so you can send them your monthly company newsletter.

In Salesforce, you can use standard and custom fields to track information. Using our list or spreadsheet example, anytime you add a field, you're adding another column. So if you add a field for Birthday, it's like another column on your list.

For our app, we can use custom fields to make an online order form. We can create fields for tracking flavor, size, and price.

Create the Custom Field for Flavor

For flavor, we can use a picklist field. A picklist is like a dropdown menu, where you can choose an item from a list.

  1. Click the Object Manager tab.
  2. Click the Drink Order object.
  3. Click Fields & Relationships in the sidebar, then click New.
  4. Select Picklist and click Next.
  5. Define the field as follows:
    • Field Label: Flavor
    • Values: Select Enter values, with each value separated by a new line
    • Enter your flavors, each on its own line. Choose any flavors you want!
    • At Required, select Always require a value in this field in order to save a record.
  6. Leave everything else as is, and click Next, Next, and Save.

Create the Custom Field for Size

We can use a picklist field for size, too.

  1. In the Fields & Relationships section, click New.
  2. Select Picklist and click Next.
  3. Define the field as follows:
    • Field Label: Size
    • Values: Select Enter values, with each value separated by a new line
    • Enter your sizes, each on its own line. Choose any sizes you want!
    • At Required, select Always require a value in this field in order to save a record.
  4. Leave everything else as is, and click Next, Next, and click Save.

Create the Custom Field for Price

Finally, we want create a field to track the price for each order. In this instance, we use a currency field.

  1. In the Fields & Relationships section, click New.
  2. Select Currency and click Next.
  3. Define the field as follows:
    • Field Label: Price
    • Length: 10
    • Decimal Places: 2
    • At Required, select Always require a value in this field in order to save a record.
  4. Leave everything else as is, and click Next, Next, and click Save.

Now you've got three fields to track flavor, size, and price for your orders. Well done!
