Track Information in Salesforce Using Objects

As an entrepreneur, if you're going to run a business, it's imperative you track things. You track items like your customers, orders, supplies, and more. In Salesforce, each of those things—customers, orders, supplies—translates to an "object."

You can think of an object as a list of items or a spreadsheet. It's a place to store and maintain information that's grouped by fields, like the first name and last name of each customer.

For our lemonade stand, we keep it simple and track our orders using a simple custom object.

Build a Custom Object

Let's start by creating a custom object, Drink Orders, to store information about the orders we plan to take.

  1. Click gear icon and select Setup.
  2. Click the Object Manager tab next to Home.
  3. Click Create and select Custom Object.
  4. Create an object as follows:
    • Label: Drink Order
    • Plural Label: Drink Orders
    • Object Name: Drink_Order
    • Record Name: Drink Order Number
    • Data Type: Auto Number
    • Display Format: D-{0000}
    • Starting Number: 1
    • Under Optional Features, select Allow Reports
    • Under Object Creation Options (available only when a custom object is first created), select Launch New Custom Tab Wizard after saving this custom object
  5. Click Save.

This directs you to the New Custom Object Tab screen. Next, let's make the tab.

Make a Custom Tab

Note: If the tab wizard didn't automatically launch, that's OK. Enter Tabs in Quick Find and select Tabs. In the Custom Object Tabs section, click New.

Follow these steps to create a tab for your custom object.

  1. For Object, select Drink Order.
  2. Click Tab Style and choose any image (we chose the cup).
  3. Click Next, Next, and Save.

Great work! You have your custom object and a tab.

In the next step, you create custom fields to store information necessary to take your orders.
