Track Your Discoveries with Custom Fields

As you continue to discover resources in the Salesforce ecosystem, you need places to track details like hyperlinks, notes, and more. You can do all of that within Salesforce, using the custom app you are building now.

Create a Custom Field for Type

Make a field for tracking the type of discovery you make, using a picklist field. A picklist is like a dropdown menu, where you can choose an item from a list.

  1. Click Object Manager.
  2. Click the Discovery object.
  3. Click Fields & Relationships and then click New.
  4. Select Picklist and then click Next.
  5. Define the field as follows:
    • Field Label: Type
    • Field Name: Type
    • Values: Select Enter values, with each value separated by a new line
    • Enter the following values:
      • Website
      • Blog
      • Event
      • Podcast
      • Group
      • Job
      • Other
    • At Required, select Always require a value in this field in order to save a record.
  6. Leave everything else as is, and click Next, Next, and Save & New.

Create a Custom Field for URL

Make a field for storing the URL of the resource you found. A URL is a hyperlink you can click to access a particular website or web page.

Because you clicked Save & New in the last section, you should already be on the New Custom Field page. If not, that’s OK. From Fields & Relationships on the Discovery object, click New.

  1. Select URL and click Next.
  2. Define the field as follows:
    • Field Label: Link
    • Field Name: Link
  3. Leave everything else as is, and click Next, Next, and Save & New.

Create a Custom Field for Notes

Make a field that you can use to make free-form notes about the resource you discovered.

Because you clicked Save & New in the previous section, you should already be on the New Custom Field page. If not, that’s OK. From Fields & Relationships on the Discovery object, click New.

  1. Select Text Area (Long) and click Next.
  2. Define the field as follows:
    • Field Label: Notes
    • Field Name: Notes
    • # Visible Lines: 3
  3. Leave everything else as is, and click Next, Next, and Save.

You did it! Up next, you create the app and add some data to your app.
