Discover Salesforce Strategies for Reopening the Workplace

For businesses, governments, constituents, citizens, and organizations all over the world, our everyday realities have changed dramatically because of COVID-19. Our previous methods of working, from in-person meetings to customer or client visits, have been transformed by the very real events happening around us, and many businesses and organizations have closed their physical workplaces as a result.

As businesses and organizations move toward reopening their physical workplaces, there are new considerations to evaluate. At Salesforce, we have been working through a number of these considerations, from physical distancing to cleaning practices to health and safety measures.

This module is meant to give you a framework for navigating some of those considerations based on our experience at Salesforce. We know that reopening will be a journey, and we want to share what we’re learning to help you along the way. This is intended as a general framework to help you get started, not as a how-to manual for every step that you may need to take in your reopening journey. Guiding Principles for Reopening Safely

At Salesforce, we’re moving toward reopening many of our physical workplaces when the time is right. Learn more about this process in this short video featuring Elizabeth Pinkham, executive vice president, Global Real Estate.

As part of our overall approach, we’re applying a set of guiding principles for reopening. These guiding principles include the following.

Create a Guideline Matrix for Reopening
We developed a decision-making process to weigh the many inputs that need to be evaluated before we consider opening a Salesforce location.

Prepare with New Health and Safety Measures
We’re reviewing protocols for our physical workplaces, including permitted screening, manual contact tracing, face coverings, workplace design, and other new protocols.

Set Expectations and Overcommunicate
We’re putting together a communications plan for our employees, which includes webinars, trainings, playbooks, signage, and more.

Redesign the Office for Physical Distancing
We’re revisiting our layouts for our work floors, meeting rooms, kitchen and social spaces, and more. We’re also exploring things like alternating workshifts to reduce employee density in the workplace.

Build a Strong Supply Chain
We’re sourcing cleaning supplies, face coverings, and other items for our workplaces.

Invest in Deep Cleaning
We’re reviewing many of the excellent guidelines for cleaning protocols that are available, and we are planning to increase both the frequency and the depth of the cleaning services in our offices.

How Salesforce Is Using

In order to reopen with safety as a top priority, we are using our own product and platform to manage this critical work. Specifically, we’re using, an all-new suite of apps and resources that business and community leaders around the world can use to reopen safely, reskill employees, and respond efficiently to the COVID-19 pandemic. brings together the full power of health experts, business leaders, the Salesforce ecosystem, and the world’s #1 CRM platform.

Salesforce is using for:

  • Wellness check-ins and assessments: Managing a daily wellness check-in and assessment for employees in physical workplaces.
  • Arrival time management: Managing a staggered approach for employee arrivals at the workplace to accommodate elevator queuing.
  • Team shift scheduling and management: Managing employee density in the workplace and maintaining building capacity levels with employee shift scheduling.
  • Employee education on new protocols and expert guidance: Providing education on new health and safety measures and protocols to our employees, along with expert-authored guidance.
  • Sharing playbooks and checklists: Distributing guidance and checklists to our employees.

At Salesforce, we will continue to adopt features as they are added to the suite of apps and resources.

Leading Through Challenging Times

During this time, it’s more important than ever to lead with clarity and purpose. At Salesforce, we’ve embraced our own V2MOM (Vision, Values, Methods, Obstacles, Measures) methodology as a way to focus on the right things. 

Here are some of the strategies we’re employing to lead through current times.

  • Collaborative groups: We have online Chatter groups where employees can ask questions and find answers.
  • Collaborative documents: We host FAQs in cloud-based Quip documents so that everyone has access.
  • All-hands meetings: Our executive team hosts regular all-employee calls, where they share the latest news with the entire company and take questions from a related Chatter group.
  • All-company emails: Our executive team sends a regular email communication with links to assets and important reminders.
  • Reskilling programs: We’re making training courses available to our employees, using Trailhead, myTrailhead, and other external resources, so that our employees can build new, marketable skills.
  • Wellbeing programs: We’re providing a B-Well video series to our employees and our entire community, along with wellness training courses and other benefits.

These are just some of the steps we’re taking right now as we move toward reopening our physical workplaces.
