Giving for Impact

Today’s workplace is a drastically changing landscape. Digital advancements, social movements, and a global pandemic are restructuring corporate culture, and at the center of it all, employees are looking to make an impact. Employees who are engaged don’t just participate in change, they drive it and lead through purpose. We’re living in an age where every individual can be a philanthropist, given the right tools and access.

Philanthropy Cloud puts employees in the driver’s seat of corporate giving. If you’ve already completed the Philanthropy Cloud Basics module, you’re familiar with how it empowers employees and companies to give back. If you haven’t taken the Basics module yet, you have that to look forward to! We’ve included a link in the Resources section below.

As an example, we’ll turn to Ursa Major Solar, Inc., a (fictional) leading alternative energy provider whose customers and shareholders value their deep commitment to environmental and social causes. Ursa Major Solar recently implemented Philanthropy Cloud to help their employees engage with their communities through giving both time and money. Lincoln Ulrich, an Account Executive at Ursa Major, was inspired to get involved after researching organizations that are working to find solutions to homelessness in his city.

Lincoln has already customized his Philanthropy Cloud profile, and now he wants to make a donation. Lincoln can donate to any campaign, nonprofit organization, or impact fund of his choosing. But first, Lincoln adds a credit card as a payment method in his profile, so it is readily available to him whenever he wants to donate.

Note

Note

Because giving and volunteering campaigns are fully customizable, their individual look and feel may vary.

Add a Payment Method

To add a credit card as a payment method in his profile, Lincoln would follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Profile. Then navigate to Payment Methods.

Lincoln’s Payment Methods section on his Profile page

  1. Select Add Card to add your first card. Once added, this card displays in your Payment Methods. The first card you add is automatically used as your default card. Each time you add a new card or edit an existing one, you can choose whether to make it your default card.

  2. If you add more than one card, you can select Manage to view, add, edit, and remove cards.

  3. Select a card to view more information about it, including any active recurring donations that are associated with the card.

Select Your Payment Options

When donating money, Lincoln can select the payment method, the donation frequency, and the amount he wants to give. Lincoln knows that recurring donations can be a valuable part of an overall giving strategy. For example, he can donate automatically to an organization on a set date each month using his credit card, making regular giving convenient.

Philanthropy Cloud supports multiple payment options, including:

Giving Method

How It Works

Credit card or debit card

Add and manage up to five cards that can be used for donations. For each credit card donation, you receive an email confirmation with a tax receipt. Receipts are available for download at any time in your giving history.

Payroll deduction

Your company may allow donations via payroll deductions. Depending on your company, you may have an annual enrollment period to select your donations, or you may be able to initiate new donations at any time. Select between one-time or recurring donations. For recurring donations, set either an amount or percentage of your salary.

Bonus payroll deduction

Select a payroll gift to be drawn from one or several bonus payrolls.

Check pledge

Give the old-fashioned way. You will receive an email with instructions on how to fulfill your pledge.

Stock pledge

Enter information about the stock you wish to donate. You will receive an email with instructions on how to fulfill your pledge.

Cash pledge

Make a one-time cash donation. You will receive an email with instructions on how to fulfill your pledge.

Note

Note

While credit card donations are always enabled, your company's Philanthropy Cloud administrator determines which of the other payment methods are allowed for your company and campaigns. For example, some of the payment options listed in the table above may not be available at your company. You may see just one payment method or several.

Make a Donation

Lincoln is now ready to make a donation. The following instructions are for making a donation with a credit card. If he wants to donate using a different payment method, the steps are similar.

Note

Note

Depending on which payment methods have been enabled for your company or giving campaign, the exact steps to complete a donation may vary.

To donate with a credit card or debit card:

  1. Select a campaign, nonprofit, or impact fund to see its full details and to donate to it. Featured and recommended content is displayed on the Home page. You can also search for content.

  2. Select a Payment Method. Your default card is pre-selected. Select Change to add or select a card other than the default one.

  3. Decide how often you want to donate. Select Give Monthly to set up a recurring donation amount or select Give Once to give one time.

  4. Decide how much you want to donate. Select or enter an amount.

  5. To add a note to a nonprofit or impact fund donation, select Add Note. These notes display in your donation history.

  6. Select Donate <your amount> to make your donation. If the campaign allows you to allocate your donation across multiple different nonprofit or impact fund recipients, you are navigated to the allocations page to do so before completing your donation. Otherwise, a summary of your donation displays and your credit card is charged immediately.

  7. An email confirmation with a tax receipt is sent to your work email address. You can download tax receipts for your credit card donations at any time in the My Giving section of your profile.

  8. To return to the campaign, nonprofit, or impact fund details page, select either Return to Campaign, Return to Impact Fund, or Return to Nonprofit, as applicable.

  9. To view your donation history in your profile, select View Donation History.

In Philanthropy Cloud, giving and volunteering are seamlessly integrated to engage everyone in effecting change. So far you’ve seen how Philanthropy Cloud lets you make a donation to a cause or organization that appeals to you. Philanthropy Cloud also guides you to volunteer opportunities. If giving is the fuel, then volunteering is the engine that drives a community forward. We’ll learn more about volunteering with Philanthropy Cloud in the next unit.
