Welcome to Philanthropy Cloud!

Philanthropy Cloud turns employees into citizen philanthropists by empowering them to give back and to make change. With Philanthropy Cloud, employees can support any cause in any way at any time. Philanthropy Cloud helps them to discover opportunities that are personally meaningful and it connects them with their colleagues on current initiatives.

For example, Ursa Major Solar, Inc. is a (fictional) leading alternative energy provider whose customers and shareholders value their deep commitment to environmental and social causes. Ursa Major Solar recently implemented Philanthropy Cloud to help engage its employees in personalized philanthropy, improve employee recruitment and retention, and provide transparency around its social impact efforts to shareholders, employees, and customers.

Lincoln Ulrich, Account Executive at Ursa Major, has a passion for helping others and he is always looking for new ways to make a difference. Lately, Lincoln has noticed a growing number of homeless people sleeping on the street near his office. This has spurred his interest in supporting organizations that are working to find solutions to homelessness in his city. Let’s follow Lincoln as he logs into Philanthropy Cloud for the first time and customizes his profile to personalize his philanthropy.

Start with the Home Page

Ursa Major Solar uses Philanthropy Cloud with Single Sign-on, so Lincoln can use the same password credentials that he uses at work to access his account. If a company does not use Single Sign-on, their Philanthropy Cloud administrator sends employees a welcome email so they can set up their accounts.

Lincoln signs into Philanthropy Cloud and lands on his company’s customized Home page. The Home page features the Impact Dashboard, as well as company-driven branding, campaigns, and messaging. It also provides personalized recommendations for him based on his profile settings.

Search Search

Lincoln can search for campaigns, volunteer opportunities, and organizations that interest him. He can refine his search by organization name or federal tax ID number.

When searching for volunteer opportunities, he can filter his search results by in-person or virtual volunteering, as well as by location and date. When searching for nonprofits, he can also filter his search results by location.

Toolbar Toolbar

Lincoln can navigate Philanthropy Cloud by selecting the appropriate icon. He can customize his profile, access documentation and support, provide feedback, and log out of the application.

Impact Dashboard Impact Dashboard

One of the first things Lincoln noticed on his Home page are the Impact Hearts that indicate what he and his colleagues have contributed.

When he hovers over the hearts, he can see which causes they’ve been donating to, broken down by percentages of contributions. Contributions are measured in dollars donated and hours volunteered.

He can also log his volunteer time right from the Home page.

Headline Content Headline Content

This is where Ursa Major displays primary content of interest from their organization. The content is displayed as a rotating carousel for prominent viewing.

Lincoln can select content to read more about it, donate to it, and/or volunteer for it.

Featured Content Featured Content

Ursa Major can feature additional content here.

Between the Headline Content and the Featured Content, companies can feature up to seven pieces of content for their employees on the Home page.

Organization Messaging Organization Messaging

Companies can choose to include branded messaging here, as Ursa Major did. When no additional messaging is configured, this section is not visible on the Home page.

Recommended Content Recommended Content

Lincoln doesn’t know much about the nonprofits serving the homeless in his local community.

But the good news is that Philanthropy Cloud can recommend cause-specific organizations to him when he customizes his profile and chooses Housing and Homelessness as a cause he’s interested in.

When he specifies his volunteering skills in his profile, those skills are matched to volunteering opportunities seeking those skills as well.

Philanthropy Cloud includes the following content:

  • Nonprofits are charitable organizations. Philanthropy Cloud includes over 1.5 million US and Canadian nonprofits sourced from GuideStar, FrontStream, and the Canada Revenue Agency. Philanthropy Cloud also includes all US and Canadian K-12 public schools for volunteering.

  • Campaigns are the beating heart of Philanthropy Cloud. They are specific, branded efforts to raise money and volunteer hours. Campaigns typically have a start date, an end date, and a goal, and they can be configured with a variety of options for how users can give and volunteer.

  • Impact Funds are a portfolio of nonprofits focused on a specific cause or issue that a user can give to. Donations are then distributed to the portfolio of nonprofits.

  • Stories consist of rich, high-quality, curated content, such as news items, blog posts, or articles, that informs employees about relevant causes, giving opportunities, and impacts.

  • Volunteer Opportunities provide occasions to volunteer with schools and nonprofit organizations. Employees can choose to volunteer in-person or virtually once, on a recurring basis, or with flexibility, depending on the opportunity.

Personalize Your Philanthropy by Customizing Your Profile

With so many worthy causes and ways to give back, finding the right one can seem overwhelming. Once Lincoln customizes his profile, Philanthropy Cloud helps him discover the most personally meaningful ways to give back by recommending the best and most relevant content.

To customize his profile, Lincoln selects Profile on the Home page toolbar.

He uploads a picture of himself and reviews his personal information to ensure it is correct. Lincoln then adds Computer Science, Event Management, People Skills, and Project Management as the skills he can offer to volunteer opportunities. And he selects Environment, Health & Wellness, Housing & Homelessness, and Hunger & Food Security as the causes he cares most about.

To select volunteering skills and causes:

  1. Navigate to Profile.

  2. Navigate to My Volunteer Skills and select Search to display a list of skills.

  3. Select the skills you can offer to volunteer opportunities. You can search for and select the appropriate skills by typing the first few letters.

  4. Select Save to save your skills.

  5. Navigate to My Causes and select Edit.

  6. Select all of the causes that you are passionate about.

  7. Select Save to save your causes.

Now that Lincoln has customized his profile, he returns to the Home page to view content that is personalized to his interests. To view more information about a cause he is interested in, or to donate money, time, or both, he selects the cause on his Home page to display its full details. (Note: We’ll dig into the specifics of making a donation and signing up for a volunteer opportunity in the Workplace Giving with Philanthropy Cloud module.)

Search for a Specific Cause or Volunteer Opportunity

Philanthropy Cloud has given Lincoln some great options for getting more involved in homelessness issues. During his bus ride home from work, he uses the mobile app to do some research and discovers a nonprofit organization in his community called No More Homelessness (NMH). He reads through their information and decides that they are an organization he wants to support.

Now that Lincoln has found an organization that he wants to donate to and possibly volunteer with, he can select the Donate button to enter his gift.

In fact, given his growing passion for the homelessness issue, Lincoln decides to talk to the manager of corporate social responsibility at Ursa Major Solar in the morning to see if he can amplify his impact by creating a company-wide campaign to engage his fellow employees in giving time and money to No More Homelessness. Who knew a routine commute could be so rewarding? We’ll show you how to donate to or volunteer for a cause in the next module.
