Get Started with an Enablement Site

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:

  • Describe the use cases and benefits of an enablement site.
  • Explain how different users interact with an enablement site.

The Value of Enablement

The Pure Aloe company produces a popular line of moisturizers and creams made from aloe vera. Its products are selling well, and the company is growing quickly. To help sustain their growth, Pure Aloe wants to expand their headcount across multiple critical roles at their company, including sales reps, support agents, and more. They want to ensure that all their new hires can quickly develop the skills and competencies they need to support the company’s growth.

With the Sales Enablement (formerly myTrailhead) license, your company can publish custom skilling and enablement content for your company’s specific products, processes, and goals. Your content is published on an enablement site: a branded experience that’s powered by the Trailhead online learning platform. You can also surface content directly in the flow of work in Salesforce, which helps you deliver relevant content to the right learner at the right time.

Note

The name myTrailhead still appears in some resources, such as videos and Salesforce Knowledge articles.

The Difference Between Trailhead and an Enablement Site

An enablement site looks and feels like Trailhead, but there are some important differences. Trailhead is for everyone to learn Salesforce skills; an enablement site is for companies to deliver custom content for their employees, customers, and partners. If you’re new to Trailhead, we recommend that you head over to the Trailhead and Trailblazer Community module for a proper introduction. Then, check out the Salesforce Help topic, Compare an Enablement Site and Trailhead, for a detailed breakdown.

Enablement Site at Pure Aloe

Pure Aloe is excited about the possibilities with an enablement site.

  • The sales team plans to use it to onboard sales reps to the company’s sales strategies: how to sell their products, manage their opportunities, and close bigger deals faster.
  • The customer success enablement team wants to use it to enable their service agents on these processes: how to troubleshoot product issues, manage cases, and drive customer satisfaction.

How can Pure Aloe create and publish all this content? An enablement site comes with Trailmaker, a group of apps for creating, managing, and publishing modules and trails. The Sales Enablement license also provides tools for surfacing that content directly in Salesforce and other work channels, such as Slack and the Trailhead GO mobile app.

Enablement site users can also build trailmixes, which are custom sets of content that users can share with each other on an enablement site. A trailmix can include these content types:

  • Custom trails or modules published on an enablement site.
  • Public trails or modules on Trailhead.
  • Links to content in a content management system (CMS), courses in a learning management system (LMS), videos on a hosting platform, or even a call recording in a call intelligence tool.

Enablement Site Roles

To launch an enablement site at a company, multiple people from various disciplines come together and fulfill important roles in content planning and delivery. Here’s a rundown of some key roles that will need the right Salesforce permissions to complete their work in an enablement site.

Note

These roles aren’t necessarily different people. Often, one person fulfills the responsibilities of multiple roles.

Role

Responsibilities

Salesforce admins

  • Set up the company’s enablement site.
  • Configure permissions for other users and their roles.
  • Configure the enablement site’s branding options, such as logo, color, and banner image.
  • Set up the role, experience level, and product filters that learners use when searching for content on the enablement site.
  • Install Trail Tracker, an AppExchange app that syncs enablement site activity with a Salesforce org.
  • Set up Learning Paths and Learning Home to make content available contextually within Salesforce.
  • Create process automation, such as assignments and notifications based on user activity in Salesforce.

Content creators

  • Create content plans that map out the modules and trails that the company wants to deliver.
  • Write content.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts (SME) to review content for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assign enablement content to learners.
  • Build and assign trailmixes.
  • Maintain existing content.

Release managers

  • Coordinate the publishing process.
  • Plan release objectives.
  • Create and enforce project schedules.
  • Publish approved content according to schedules.

Learners

  • Complete enablement content.
  • Create trailmixes for their personal learning activities or to share with their colleagues.

Team Dependencies

To work effectively, content creators sometimes depend on the time and input from people on other teams. These dependencies usually don’t require any specific Salesforce permissions.

  • Subject matter experts who review and approve content. SMEs typically review drafts in a word processing tool before content creators publish to an enablement site.
  • A localization team or vendor who translates content from the default language, English, into other languages that an enablement site supports. A localization team or vendor typically works with English content that’s been formatted in and exported from Trailmaker.

How Learners Access Enablement Content

Typically, content creators want learners to complete certain content that’s most relevant to their work in Salesforce. They can surface specific content in a few ways.

  • Share the link to the enablement site’s landing page, and let learners search for content on their own.
  • Share the link to a specific trailmix, trail, or module on the enablement site.
  • Search for a module in the Trailhead Slack app, and share it directly with specific learners or groups.
  • Assign a trailmix within the Trail Tracker app. When a learner logs in to the enablement site, Trailmix assignments display in the Assigned to Me section on the Today page. With some custom configuration, your Salesforce admin can automate trailmix assignments, notifications, and reminders based on different factors, such as users’ activity within Salesforce.
  • Assign a module within the Trail Tracker app. With some custom configuration, your Salesforce admin can surface module assignments within a specific Salesforce page with Lightning web components. They can also automate module assignments, notifications, and reminders.

To help drive adoption and enable users to learn as they work, assign modules with Learning Paths in Salesforce Lightning Experience. Modules appear dynamically on Salesforce pages that you specify, and users can see all assigned modules on Learning Home. For more information, see the Resources section at the end of this unit.

Trailmixes

A trailmix lets any learner contribute to a company’s learning goals. Anyone—not just content creators—can create a trailmix. Learners can create trailmixes for themselves to map out skills and knowledge that they want to develop and refine. And anyone can share their trailmixes with colleagues to help foster a community of continuous enablement.

Let’s take a look at the Welcome to Pure Aloe trailmix, which contains both Pure Aloe content on their enablement site, such as the trail Navigate Your Pure Aloe Career, and links to a video series, Aloe Vera: A Medicinal Wonder, that’s external to the enablement site.

Welcome to Pure Aloe trailmix

Hemanth, a new business development rep (BDR) at Pure Aloe, is assigned the trailmix and receives a link to the trailmix in Slack. When he follows the link, he’s sent to the Pure Aloe enablement site. He clicks the trail title, then dives into the first module in the trail, Career Development at Pure Aloe. He completes each unit in the module and takes the quizzes. Then, the celebratory digital confetti tells him that he’s earned his very first badge.

Note

Your enablement site can authenticate users in a couple of different ways. Depending on the method your company selects, users can either navigate directly to your enablement site without extra authentication, or they must first create a Trailhead account. To learn more, check out the Enablement Site Configuration module.

Hemanth can also find more trails, modules, and trailmixes by navigating the tabs across the top of the page. For more details about how learners navigate the enablement site and find content, check out the Salesforce Help topic, Find Content on an Enablement Site.
