Complete the Initial Setup

Initial Setup and Configuration

Here are the final setup steps you take so your users can get started.

  1. Create an entry event data extension.
  2. Create a Distributed Marketing sender profile.
  3. Install Distributed Marketing content blocks.
  4. Add Distributed Marketing Lightning components.

Let’s take a look at each one to understand what you’re setting up and why it’s required.

Create Entry Event Data Extension

Data extensions represent tables that contain attributes, or individual pieces of data, about your customers in Marketing Cloud. For example, a data extension created for customer data can include a customer email address, gender, membership status, and zip code.

Distributed Marketing uses entry event data extensions that capture a standard set of information for the contacts and leads that your users approve for messaging. Then Marketing Cloud Journey Builder evaluates the data, assigns the customer to the appropriate journey, and sends personalized messages.

Distributed Marketing also creates data extensions in Marketing Cloud to store data that users enter when personalizing messages. We create these personalization data extensions for you when you first connect a journey to a campaign. Learn more about the Personalization Data Extension.

Create Distributed Marketing Sender Profile

Have you ever noticed that some emails you receive are sent from a department within a company, such as customersupport@nto.com? That sender information is set by a profile in Marketing Cloud Email Studio, which contains the sender name and address that the message displays in the subscriber’s email client. You can create custom sender profiles that make it easy to dynamically control the sender name and email address across your organization.

By default, Distributed Marketing messages are sent on behalf of the running user—the business user who sends the message—using two fields in the Event Data Extension: sendFromName and sendFromEmail. These fields populate with the name and email address stored on the standard Salesforce user record (check out the Name and Email fields on the User object, if you’re curious).

To create a Distributed Marketing sender profile, navigate to Email Studio in Marketing Cloud. Click Email, then click Admin. Under Send Management, click Sender Profiles. Create a sender profile using this information under Sender Information.

Add Distributed Marketing Components

You’ve created amazing content and set up the plumbing to make sure the right message is sent from the right user at the right cadence. Now it’s time to get that content in front of your business users! You can use the Campaign Messages component or the Quick Send component to let users view, personalize, and send Marketing Cloud messages to their book of business. 

Add the Quick Send component to a contact or lead layout to allow users to send single emails to individuals directly from their record. Add the Campaign Messages component to the campaign object to help users send single or multi-touch messages to groups of individuals. Both are powered by Marketing Cloud journeys and can be used in the Sales, Service, Financial Services, or Community Clouds.

Are you using person accounts? That’s awesome—you can use both of these components. Business accounts are not supported.

Enable Tracking

Want to track how customers are interacting with messages sent through Distributed Marketing? All tracking data is collected through Marketing Cloud Connect. Complete the Use Marketing Cloud Connect to Integrate with Salesforce CRM trail to learn more about this integration. Marketing Cloud Connect is not required for use with Distributed Marketing unless you want to access tracking data.
