Is there anyway to customize what fields appear on a related list?

I am working on a large database for a non-profit that houses a great deal of data. There are many many objects, many relationships, and because of that, many related lists.

For instance, on a individual's detail page, there is the basic information and then 10-15 related custom objects that show up as related lists.

For some of them, it would be really nice to see more than just the auto-number or name of the record on the related list. Is there any way to customize what fields you see on these related lists?

For instance, let's say we had a child named Sally and there was a related custom object called "Contact Information" and it housed the information for all of Sally's relatives. "Contact Information" is the detail of the master-detail relationship (with Contact being the master). So, "Contact Information" shows up as a related list on Individual. Right now, all I can see is the name of the record. Is there any way to see other fields on the related list, like "Type of relationship", etc?
