MuleSoft introduced great feature enhancements over the past year. Let’s take a look at some of the more important ones for developers.

MuleSoft Developer I Exam Overview

The Salesforce Certified MuleSoft Developer I credential is designed for individuals who have experience working on basic Mule 4 runtime engine projects with guidance and supervision. A certified MuleSoft Developer I can design, build, test, debug, deploy, and manage basic application programming interfaces (APIs) and integrations, moving from Anypoint Platform to Anypoint Studio and back.

Prepare for a Smooth Transition to Java 17

Studio 7.17.0 and Mule Runtime 4.6 Now Support Java 17

Developers can expect extended support and increased performance as MuleSoft adopts Java’s long-term support (LTS) release model. Begin your transition with the Mule runtime 4.6 release, which supports both Java 8 and Java 17 LTS. With 4.6, developers can upgrade their integration apps, connectors, policies, and proxies. Prepare to align with industry changes, as many third-party libraries are ending support for Java version 8.

Using this content, developers can ensure a smooth transition to Java 17 before February 2025. This change has no immediate impact on Mule applications that are running on currently supported Mule versions, or on applications that are upgraded to Mule runtime 4.6. Existing Java 8 apps will continue to run on Java 8 until February 2025.

Why Upgrade to Java 17 with Mule 4.6?

Developers will experience improved performance and security, and can take advantage of extended Java support.

  • Boost performance: Java 17 introduces performance improvements such as quicker startup times, reduced garbage collection delays, and better handling of large applications.
  • Strengthen security: Java 17 brings critical security updates and fixes to protect your applications with the latest defenses against vulnerabilities.
  • Assure long-term support: Java 17 is an LTS release, offering extended support for a stable and reliable foundation, especially for enterprise applications with long lifecycles.

Learn how to update existing projects, develop new projects with the latest compatible dependencies, and choose the appropriate Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for them. Salesforce offers a comprehensive guide to upgrading MuleSoft to Java 17.

Begin your transition with the Mule runtime 4.6 release, which supports both Java 8 and Java 17 LTS. Download Anypoint Studio 7.17, which offers embedded support for both Java versions. MuleSoft has also updated all connectors for Java 17 compatibility.

Create a Strategy to Upgrade from Mule 4.4 to 4.6

Analyze your current Mule 4.4 setup and create a comprehensive upgrade plan, including testing, rollback strategies, and post-upgrade checks. Schedule downtime and inform stakeholders to minimize any business disruption.

Mule Apps

You can update, test, and redeploy most of your currently running Mule apps to use Java 17. However, any apps and connectors that are running custom Java code require additional work to certify those components. Before you upgrade your integration apps or Mule Gateway policies and proxies to Java 17, update all extensions, modules, and connectors used within those apps and policies to Java 17. To ensure your API proxies or Mule apps are protected when upgrading, upgrade your API policies before upgrading your API proxies or Mule apps.

Regular MuleSoft upgrades grant you access to the latest features, enhancements, and fixes, bolstering your system's performance and security. Stay compatible, reduce risks, and maintain a robust integration environment with MuleSoft. Refer to the listed resources for the latest documentation, knowledge articles, and blog topics surrounding the Java 17 transition.

Use AnyPoint Connector for Data Cloud

Studio 7.18.0 is Now Packaged with Anypoint Connector for Salesforce Data Cloud

Use MuleSoft Anypoint Connector for Salesforce Data Cloud to integrate data from any cloud or legacy systems to deliver personalized, connected, and relevant customer experiences. Simplify connecting your Mule applications to Data Cloud. Its native inclusion in Anypoint Studio eliminates the need to add the connector from Anypoint Exchange.

Automate data ingestion from third-party sources by first setting up the Ingestion API and then MuleSoft Anypoint Connector.

You can also query data to get new insights from Data Cloud using the query, profile, and calculated insights APIs. With MuleSoft Anypoint Connectors, you can:

  • Integrate systems 5x faster using prebuilt connectors from Anypoint Exchange.
  • Connect to SaaS applications like SAP, Marketo, and Microsoft Dynamics 365.
  • Integrate with cloud infrastructure and services like Amazon Kinesis, Azure Data Lake Storage, and Azure Blob Storage.
  • Use JDBC and other open protocols to connect to databases like Kafka, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
  • Authenticate easily when the JSON Web Token (JWT) expires.
  • Eliminate Data Cloud REST APIs by determining the CDP tenant-specific endpoint and paths to make requests based on the user’s configuration.
  • Build integration flows without custom code, as MuleSoft provides many other connectors that can work with Salesforce MuleSoft Connector.

Salesforce Data Cloud Connector Use Cases

Connect your business applications with Data Cloud to unify profiles, segment unified data, and activate and analyze data. Use cases include:

  • Change data capture: Stream changes in records from the source system into Data Cloud in near-real-time using the Streaming Ingestion API.
  • Legacy integration: Schedule daily, weekly, or monthly loads of bulk exports from legacy systems using the Bulk Ingestion API.
  • Deliver a consistent, connected customer experience: Publish insights from Data Cloud into upstream systems like Salesforce CRM using the Query, Profile, or Calculated Insights APIs.

The MuleSoft Anypoint Connector for Salesforce Data Cloud provides a quick and easy way to integrate with Salesforce Data Cloud API endpoints.

Studio 7.18.0 Supports Multi-Factor Authentication Methods

Enhance your security in Anypoint Studio by configuring two-factor authentication through Anypoint Platform. Protect your development environment by ensuring that sensitive data remains secure from unauthorized access. Secure access by choosing one of the supported methods.

  • Google Authenticator
  • YubiKey
  • Windows Hello

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) provides an additional layer of verification for Anypoint Platform users. MuleSoft requires MFA when users access Anypoint Platform, either directly with their Anypoint credentials or via single sign-on (SSO).

Manage Your Multi-Factor Authentication

You must register using at least one method to use MFA, but you can add to or modify the verification methods that you use to sign in. To add a verification method to your account:

  1. Sign in to Anypoint Platform.
  2. In the Anypoint Platform navigation bar, click the circle icon containing the initials associated with your Anypoint Platform account.
  3. In the dropdown, click Profile or the entry that contains your username.
  4. Click Configure MFA. A page with Manage Your Verification Methods appears.
  5. Next to the verification method you want to configure, click Add. Follow the instructions to configure your preferred verification method.
  6. Click Done.

If you remove verification methods, you must have at least one verification method configured before you save your changes.

Sum It Up

You’ve learned about some of the most important MuleSoft feature releases over the past year. Now it’s time to test your understanding of these topics and complete the quiz to maintain your MuleSoft Developer I certification.
