Set Up a Loyalty Program Process for Purchases

Summarize the Process Requirements

Loyalty program processes help Mary decide how incoming and new transactions are processed. The process uses rules to evaluate how to execute transaction journals. Before creating the rules in the system, Mary visualizes the requirements and the rules that go into the process.

The first requirement is to create a loyalty program process for all purchases of accrual-type transaction journals. This process is based on the three rules discussed in Step 1. Let’s quickly summarize.

  • The first rule credits points equal to the transaction amount for purchase-related transactions.
  • The second rule checks if the purchased product is part of the Super Kicks promotion.
  • The third rule checks if the transaction qualifies for the cumulative promotion. A cumulative promotion is based on long-term member behavior.

The second requirement is for a loyalty program process for engagement activities. This process comprises only one rule: to credit a predefined number of Regular Points and Tier Points.

In this step, you create the first loyalty program process. The second one has already been created for you. You learn more about this process in Step 4: Process Transaction Journals.

Let’s look at how to create a process for the first requirement.

Create the Process

With all the requirements and rules laid out, it’s time to create the loyalty program process. Here, Mary selects the type of transactions to process and the mode to process them in. For the mode, she can select real-time or batch. Real-time processes transactions as soon as they are generated, while batch processes transactions based on a schedule. She can also process the transactions in a combination of the two. As per the rules she designed, points related to purchases are credited in real time.

Here’s how Mary creates the program processes for purchases of accrual-type transaction journals.

  1. Click App Launcher, and select Loyalty Management.
  2. Ensure that the All Loyalty Programs list view is displayed.
  3. In the Program Name column, click the Cloud Kicks Inner Circle loyalty program.
  4. Click the Processes tab.
  5. In the Loyalty Program Processes related list, click New.
  6. In the Select a Process Template window, select Create from Scratch and click Next.
  7. Add the following details.
    • Name: Credit Points for Purchases
    • Process Execution Method: Real Time
    • Process Type: TransactionJournal
    • Journal Type: Accrual
    • Journal Subtype: Purchase
  8. Click Save.

Mary now adds rules to this program process.

Create a Rule to Credit Points for Purchases

Based on the first rule that Mary outlined in Step 1, members earn points equal to the transaction amount. Here’s how she creates this rule.

  1. In the Cloud Kicks Inner Circle program record, click the Processes tab.
  2. Click the Credit Points for Purchases program process.
  3. In the Loyalty Process Rules related list, click New.
  4. Add the following details.
    • Name: Points for Purchases
    • Start Date: Current date
  5. Click Save.

Rules are executed using a combination of conditions and actions, which work as if-then statements. Mary adds the actions required to execute this rule.

Add Actions to Credit Regular Points and Tier Points

The first rule calls for members to be credited with Regular Points and Tier Points equal to the transaction amount. Mary defines two Credit Points actions for this.

  1. In the Points for Purchases rule, click Add Step.
  2. Hover over Add Action and select Credit Points.
  3. Add the following details.
    • Action Name: Credit Non-qualifying Points
    • Currency Name: Fixed Value; Regular Points
    • Points to Credit: TransactionJournal.TransactionAmount
  4. Click Done.
  5. Click Save. The New Action window where you create an action to credit Regular Points
  6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 with the following exceptions.
    • Action Name: Credit Qualifying Points
    • Currency Name: Fixed Value; Tier Points
  7. Click Activate.

This rule processes all transactions with Accrual journal type and Purchase journal subtype. The rule also credits points equal to the transaction amount.

So far, Mary created a loyalty program process for accrual transactions. To this process, she added the rules to credit members’ points for their purchases. In the next step, you see how Mary creates rules for promotions.
