Introduction

Your company is planning its quarterly customer visits to Salesforce accounts with open opportunities. This is time-consuming if you have to comb through the account records, find the location of each customer, and then schedule meetings in the most efficient way possible. Luckily, you have Salesforce Maps, which provides you with the geographic visualization you need to complete this task quickly and effectively.

Benefits of Marker Layer Builder

As outlined in the Salesforce Maps Layers badge, the Marker Layer Builder allows for:

• Visibility into data: Plotting the marker layer gives users access to key data insights and location, which helps users and managers make efficient decisions.
• Time savings: No more wasted time digging through objects, records and location fields, such as address fields to view where accounts and service requests are based.
• Flexibility: View data from standard and custom objects, and filter data to reflect your needs.

Marker Layer Folders

In this project, you get hands-on practice building a marker layer for a sales user in Salesforce Maps. But, before you create a marker layer for sales users, let’s get organized and ensure users have access to relevant marker layers. In this case, create a folder for the sales team. All sales related marker layers will be stored in that folder. 

Sign Up for a Developer Edition Org with Salesforce Maps

To complete this module, you need a special Developer Edition org that contains Salesforce Maps and sample data. Get the free Developer Edition and connect it to Trailhead now so you can complete the challenges in this module. Note that this Developer Edition is designed to work with the challenges in this badge, and may not work for other badges. Always check that you’re using the Trailhead Playground or special Developer Edition org that we recommend. 

1. Sign up for a free Developer Edition org with Salesforce Maps.
2. Fill out the form.
   1. For Email, enter an active email address.
   2. For Username, enter a username that looks like an email address and is unique, but it doesn’t need to be a valid email account (for example, yourname@test.com).
3. After you fill out the form, click Sign me up. A confirmation message appears.
4. When you receive the activation email (this might take a few minutes), open it and click Verify Account.
5. Complete your registration by setting your password and challenge question. Tip: Write down your username, password, and login URL for easy access later.
6. You are now logged in to your Developer Edition.

Now connect your new Developer Edition org to Trailhead.

1. Make sure you’re logged in to your Trailhead account.
2. In the Challenge section at the bottom of this page, click the playground name and then click Connect Org.
3. On the login screen, enter the username and password for the Developer Edition you just set up.
4. On the Allow Access? screen, click Allow.
5. On the Want to connect this org for hands-on challenges? screen, click Yes! Save it.

You are redirected back to the challenge page and ready to use your new Developer Edition to earn this badge.

Create Marker Layer Folders

Start by creating a subfolder for the sales team in the Corporate Folder. 

1. If you’re not currently in the Maps app, click and select Salesforce Maps.
2. Select the Maps tab.
3. If a Privacy Policy appears, select Dismiss.
4. The Layers tab will automatically be selected.
5. Click the Saved tab.
   
   
   
   
6. Click the Corporate folder.
7. Select .
8. Select Folder.
9. For Folder Name, enter Sales Team.
10. Click Done.

Sales users have the Standard User Profile in Salesforce. To ensure they will have access to the marker layers in the Sales Team folder, give users with the Standard User Profile read only access, as follows.

1. Select  .
2. Select Edit Permissions.
3. Select .
4. Click Profile.
5. Under Permission For,  search for and select Standard User.
   
   
   
   
6. Select Read.
7. Select Save and then Close.

Excellent! You created a folder in Salesforce Maps for your Sales team and gave them read only access. Now, you can create markers layers for the Sales team and store them in this folder. In the next step, you learn how to create a marker layer.
