Get Started with Salesforce Optimizer

Learning Objectives

After completing this unit, you’ll be able to:

  • Describe key features of Salesforce Optimizer.
  • Explain how Salesforce Optimizer can improve your org.

What Is Salesforce Optimizer?

Entropy. Chaos. Disorder. One of the fundamental laws of our universe is that things tend to lose structure over time. This is true everywhere you look—from your once-organized shoe collection that’s now a jumbled mess in your closet to your Salesforce org.

Restoring order to your shoe closet is fairly straightforward. For a Salesforce admin, unfortunately, decluttering your org is a little more challenging. It’s easy to ignore or delay—decluttering takes time and energy away from innovating and delivering the cool new functionality your users are asking for. And where do you start? Disorder can creep in just about everywhere in the Setup tree, from Apex to Workflow Rules.

That’s why we created Salesforce Optimizer, a powerful, free, and simple tool that takes a snapshot of your Salesforce org and looks for potential problems in your implementation. Salesforce Optimizer gives you detailed data right inside your org on more than 50 metrics covering everything from storage, fields, custom code, custom layouts for objects, reports and dashboards, and much more. For each metric we provide:

  1. What we have found in your org
  2. What you should do about it
  3. Resources to learn more

With this blueprint, your team can build out a plan to address problem areas, prepare for Lightning migration, or improve user satisfaction with your implementation.

Why Should I Care?

If that isn’t enough to convince you that Salesforce Optimizer deserves a prominent place in your admin tool kit, take a look at some common admin challenges and how Optimizer can help you address them.

I want to clean up my org, but I don’t know where to start.

Apex, workflow rules, custom fields, user profiles. Not sure where to begin? Salesforce Optimizer generates a list sorted by type, level of effort, and status to help you figure out what to tackle first.

My users are complaining about slow performance and busy page layouts.

Field creep is real, especially if your Salesforce org has been around for a few years. Salesforce Optimizer combs through all your custom fields and page layouts and identifies potential candidates for cleanup.

What Salesforce governor limits am I approaching?

If you’ve ever encountered a Salesforce governor limit, you can appreciate these findings. Get details on common governor limits, so you can avoid them before things start breaking.

I can barely keep up with Salesforce’s releases. What new features am I missing out on?

With three releases per year chock full of hundreds of new features, it’s hard to keep up. Salesforce Optimizer recommends new features that provide real value to users and make you look like an admin superhero.

We’re planning the move from Classic to Lightning Experience.

Salesforce Optimizer can even help you prepare for your move to Lightning Experience. Run a report to see which fields, layouts, automation, Apex code, and other configurations you’re not using. Then reboot before the move, and only transition the stuff you need.

Can you relate to any of these scenarios? In the next unit, we show you how to run Salesforce Optimizer and address report findings.
